The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University and the Universidade Aberta jointly offer a PhD Programme in Medieval Studies, taught via e-learning, with a brief on site component (a week of intensive study).

In the Programme the interdisciplinary training assumes a central role and the thesis will compulsorily have to be developed in two different areas of specialisation.

Candidates must have knowledge of Portuguese (mainly reading skills), although the activities within the PhD programme (participation in discussions, reports and seminar papers) may be delivered in Spanish, French or English.

Objectives

The main objective of this Programme is to offer advanced training in the field of Medieval Studies, from a multi and interdisciplinary perspective and learning environment.
We aim at promoting independent authonomous research whilst stimulating the capacity for producing high quality papers to be submited to peer reviewed prestigious journals

Its structure was conceived in order to have the post graduate students:

a) think critically on the materials and the main questions affecting the field of Medieval Studies, using interdisciplinarity and comparability as the best way to approach the problems;

b) apply methods, concepts and theories in complex contexts, whether generalistic or specialized.

c) deepening the mastery of special techniques, tools, methodologies and theoretical background which are the backbone of any advanced practice of research in Medieval Studies.

Medieval Primary Sources Seminar (12 ECTS)

This seminar aims at studying four different types of documents/themes per semester under different perspectives (for each document/ set of topics)

Medieval Methodologies Workshop (12 ECTS)

Faculty Staff: Adelaide Costa (UAb) – History; Catarina Tente (FCSH/NOVA) - Archaeology; Joana Ramôa (FCSH/NOVA) - Art; Carlos Carreto (UAb) - Literature.

This seminar aims at providing the students with the necessary knowledge in methodologies, research tools and resources, as well as the techniques of analysis which are fundamental for any researcher in Medieval Studies.

Questioning Medieval Studies: Problems and Theories (18 ECTS)

The main goal of this Seminar is to familiarize the student with the more modern and questioning problems which affect medieval Studies nowadays.

This Seminar is organized as a group of lectures on the several crossroad questions in Medieval Studies. It is different each year, depending on the guest lecturers. It aims at deepening the knowledge and critical comprehension of theoretical-methodological models and of the scientific branch of Medieval Studies and its applicability to diversifyed multi and interdisciplinary research contexts

Specific Access Conditions

Those who can be admitted to this programme include:

a) Holders of an MA degree or legal equivalent;

b) Holders of undergraduate degree, with an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum, officially recognized by the institutions granting the degree as attesting ability for carrying over this cycle of studies;
