CEAS Seminar – Performances of History, Nostalgia and Technology in India and Diaspora

Bards, songs, and stories have always been present in both history and memory passed down through generations. While modes of social organisation have evolved — from small communities to large nations — performances of history remain a leitmotif, reflecting both the time in which they are performed and the time they represent.

In this seminar, Aishwarya Walvekar will present her ongoing doctoral research, which focuses on the politics of performing history in public spaces and its intersections with religion, nation, and heritage.

The discussion will explore questions such as:

  •  What role does postcolonial and decolonial literature play in spatialising nostalgia through performance?
  •  What strategies does performing history activate in creating a culture intended for consumption both in India and across the diaspora?

Speaker: Aishwarya Walvekar (EUTOPIA Co-tutelle PhD Fellow, University of Warwick & NOVA FCSH)
